John Corbett

I was flipping channels at around 2 a.m. and I found myself watching Emeril Live on The Food Network.  You've gotta have respect for anyone who can take a run of the mill cooking show, add a live studio audience and a band, and get people to clap for him just by adding some hot sauce to a dish or sprinkling a little garlic.  Anyway, as he's going to commercial, he has a guest playing some music.  The guy's name is John Corbett.  Apparently, he was an actor in Northern Exposure and My Big Fat Greek Wedding.  I didn't realize he was an actor until I read his bio on his website. 

His music, at least the few songs he played on t.v., was really good.  His website describes his style as "Southern Rock" that "takes country music's earthy emotionalism and gives it a rowdy, rocking kick." A few of the songs I heard on his site were a little "too country" for me, but most of them were great.  He kind of reminds me of Blues Traveler but with more of a country twist.

Cooking at Home

I'm no longer working crazy hours, 6 days per week.  That, coupled with the fact that I'm also trying to eat healthier foods, made me decide to put forth more of an effort to cook meals at home.  I know how to grill and how to cook some basic things but I want to challenge myself to learn to cook more advanced meals.  I'm starting out with the very basics though.  In fact, the two websites I used last night when starting to prepare my meals for the week were How to bake a potato and How to hard boil an egg.  Both sites were very helpful.

Home Sweet Home

So I recently did something I had never done before.... I renewed my lease!!! Normally, when my lease is up, I always move to somewhere that I think will be better, more fun, etc., etc.  But I really like the area and my place.  And when the landlord agreed to install a programmable electric thermostat for me, and to give me a brand new stove and refrigerator, how could I resist??? Since I'm going to be here another year, I took it upon myself to invest $10 for a new shower head.  I've always wanted a shower head that provided enough water pressure to throw me against the back wall of the shower.  My neighbor, Erik came over and helped me put it in.  We took out the rubber gasket that is designed to restrict water flow and that did the trick!

Another Retreat

Sorry for not posting for a little while.... 

I got to participate in another Christ Renews His Parish retreat.  Those of us who participated in the last September's retreat got to lead the weekend.  We had been told that hosting the weekend is even better than going to one as a participant.  I found that hard to believe because I had gotten so much out of the retreat that I participated in last year.  But just as we had been promised, putting this weekend on was an incredible, life-changing experience. 

There is no better feeling than to hear someone tell you that you had a positive influence on his life.  And that's what happened at the end of the retreat.  I was just one of many people who helped out, but to be even a small part of something so powerful was exhilarating.  This experience really encourages me to seek out more ways to be a positive influence on people -- not just at church, but in my everyday life.
